A well-managed forestry asset should be reviewed as a whole landholding rather than simply as a crop schedule.
Alongside timber, restocking and long-term forest management, FAM considers wider opportunities that may improve income, capital value or strategic optionality. Potential examples include renewable energy, grid, electricity infrastructure, wayleaves, access, utilities, telecoms, sporting, buildings, planning, leases, biodiversity, carbon, strategic land and other appropriate land uses.
Not every opportunity should be pursued. The objective is to determine which opportunities are worth pursuing, which should be left alone and how each decision affects the long-term forestry asset.
The best forestry asset management looks beyond the crop, without losing sight of the forest.
